Vijay Shivthare was busted after a student spots the lens of a mobile.

The police have arrested a peon of a reputed senior college in Vikhroli on the charge of filming girls in a ladies’ washroom of the institute. Accused Vijay Shivthare was exposed after a student spotted a mobile phone with its camera on in the loo.

Shivthare, 29, was arrested from his Vikhroli home on Wednesday night, hours after the college authorities approached the cops. The Class IV employee had been working at the college for the past one year.

Police sources said a 19-year-old student went to the toilet around 9.30 am. She noticed a tiny round black glass amid pieces of cardboard and bricks on the windowsill. As she removed a few of them, she was shocked to find a mobile phone.

“The girl saw that the camera of the phone was on which meant that it had been recording for some time. She rushed to her teacher who informed the college authorities,” said an investigator.

Shridhar Hanchate, senior inspector of Vikhroli police station, said that the peon was the natural suspect as he had access to all the washrooms before and after working hours. They cracked the case in no time since the phone had the numbers of Shivthare’s friends and family members.

Sources said the police will probe if this was a one-off incident or Shivthare had been filming girls regularly. “We have seized his phone and are investigating the content,” said Hanchate.

Shivthare has been booked under section 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66 (E) (punishment for violation of privacy) of the IT Act. If convicted, he can be jailed up to three years and face a maximum fine of Rs 2 lakh.
