Why Should You Not Buy Jio Phone!

It's confirmed, Reliance Jio's much-awaited JioPhone will not support the popular instant messaging app WhatsApp. According to the company sources, who didn't want to be named, the upcoming VoLTE feature phones will not support WhatsApp (at least initially for sure).

The feature phone, however, will come pre-loaded with a range of Jio apps including JioChat, JioTV, JioCinema and more as well as the popular third-party apps such as Facebook and YouTube. The default apps will also include PM Narendra Modi's Namo app, as Mukesh Ambani's son Akash showcased 'Mann ki Baat' in the Namo app while talking about the phone on stage during its unveiling last week.

The JioPhone is said to run on KAI OS, which is a forked OS version of the Firefox OS. For now, it doesn't offer support for WhatsApp. However, according to sources, this may not be the case forever as the feature phone could support WhatsApp as and when the updates are rolled out. Also, the phone does not come with support for hotspot, though it has not been specified if this is due to lack of hardware support or the feature has been locked on software end.

Unveiled at RIL's 40th annual general meeting (AGM) by chairman Mukesh Ambani, JioPhone comes at an "effective" price of Rs 0. The company is though will be taking a refundable security deposit Rs 1500 to avoid potential misuse of the device. The amount will be refunded after a minimum period of three years.

The handset will hit the market on August 15 for beta testing. Pre-booking for JioPhone starts on August 24 and the device will be made available on first-come-first-serve basis by September.

Reliance JioPhone has its own digital assistant, along with support for voice commands. It includes support for 22 Indian languages as well. Furthermore, the company has promised to add NFC payment support to JioPhones later this year. The feature will arrive as part of a software update.

Reliance Jio has also announced numerous plans for its feature phone. These plans start at Rs 23 and go all the way up to Rs 309. The daily FUP limit in all these plans is 500MB per day and all domestic voice calls are completely free.
