In a provocative attack, Pakistani soldiers crossed into the Indian territory in the Machhal sector of northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district and ambushed a patrol team, killing three Indian soldiers and decapitating one of them.

The deceased have been identified as grenadier Manoj K Kushwah of Gazipur in Uttar Pradesh, rifleman Prabhu Singh of Teh Shergarh in Rajasthan and rifleman Shashank K Singh of Teh Mohamadabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Sources said the ambush was carried out by the Border Action Team (BAT) of the
Pakistan army, which also consists of commandos and dreaded terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad outfits.

Sources told DH that an area domination patrol party of the Army was patrand laid an ambush inside the Indian territory,” they said.olling the posts near the Line of Control (LoC) fence in the early hours when the BAT attacked them. "A BAT, wearing black combat uniform, crossed the LoC

Sources maintained that the BAT managed to escape from the spot after carrying out the deadly attack.

"As Indian posts are closer to Pakistan in the Machhal sector, the rugged terrain and thick forest give infiltrators an advantage to escape,” they added.

'Heavy retribution’
The Army, while vowing revenge, confirmed that three of its men were killed in the Machhal sector. "Three soldiers killed in action on LoC in Machhal. Body of one soldier mutilated, retribution will be heavy for this cowardly act,” the Northern Command said in a tweet.

This was the second such attack in the same area as Sepoy Mandeep Singh was beheaded by the BAT on October 28. The BAT had in January 2013 decapitated two Indian soldiers - Lance Naik Hemraj and Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh - after entering the Indian territory in the Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district.

During the Kargil War in 1999, Captain Saurabh Kalia, soldiers Arjunram Baswana, Mula Ram Bidiasar, Naresh Singh Sinsinwar, Bhanwar Lal Bagaria and Bhika Ram Mudh of the 4 Jat Regiment were captured by the Pakistani troops and tortured to death.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday condemned the killing of three Indian soldiers along the LoC. "Condemn the cowardly killing of our soldiers and mutilation of one of them. Salute these brave martyrs for their sacrifice,” Parrikar said in New Delhi, after he was informed about the killings by Army Vice-Chief Lt Gen Bipin Rawat. Later, Parrikar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and top officials of the security establishment took stock of the situation. Doval apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the border situation.
